Commentary by Ashley Cummock & Interview with Jessica
Race is not just one color.
Your first character to begin with is Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, as she progresses
Dorothy is usually symbolized by her Ruby red slippers and she changes from black shoes to the magical slippers in the film the Wizard of Oz. In this exhibit she changes to Purple. I realized a connection through the music that expresses feminism in the lyrics by Prince, "Purple Rain." . Prince's lyrics celebrate s like the childhood story bringing in an adult theme through fashion, lyrics, and expression. Purple Rain Prince is also battling time and also has to run away from home and his relationship with his friends produces the music, hence the goal of the film.
Specifically looking at the relationship between Prince and Appolonia there is a scene which symbolically develops and is dunked into the water, just as stepping in the Purple Rain Shoes magically transform and protect the girl into the feminine realm of music. I want the audience to also find their own self. They wear glasses of purple lenses to help the viewer find personal courage that is inside the self all along like Dorothy, Prince and Appollonia. The audience walks through the symbolic curtain of Purple Rain.
The relationship between a friend, artist and her mother also inspired this art. A friend's story of mother and daughter evolution and relationship influenced the feeling behind the transformation aspect in this project. She couldn't identify with her mother's expectation of feminine transformation. She walked into a new world and new color. She has in the process of changing genders and even went to the measures of binding her breasts down. This brought to light the issues that feminism and the historical idea of feminism. Historically begin an idea of goddess and in literature you're the one to look to the book "Beloved". The Mother and other relationships reveal different types of mother and daughter relationships: equals/ dependents vs. healthy individuality. What constitutes healthy relationships between women? In an effort to learn more about African American her-story, look to literature. I continually re-watch film because connecting through the Wizard of Oz I found a girl who helps people find a brain, courage, and is a story to journey overcoming a threat. final Message: These things were always in her (what she sought) from the beginning. The shoes protect her in this journey and is relatable, friendship helps each other and the music from the film helps each other.

Candy's critical analysis of Jessica's Project Purple
African-Americans are connected with water. Jessica's connecting Prince's "Purple Rain" with feminine water through memory- "an apparition of an unknown thing". Rivers can be mapped geographically: Memories can be mapped through sweat, tears, birthing through its cycles; the body remembers these cycles.
The violet glasses added a balance to the yellow lights that added an upbeat tone.
Jessica read her writing and research with oomph but I get confused by so much research. I feel divided between the research (prose) and poetry (Purple Rain lyrics).
Visually I'm interested in the prints that use less patterns because of her crafting of the digital is done well. Especially the Nile River piece because of the bizarre independent line that subtly spills into the Nile River with the parallel lines to a form of a rectangle. The unreal colors feel digital ( hot pinks and blues) and a bizarre loose connection to water.
